Does Recycling Get Recycled? Investigating the Reality

Genuine reprocessing of recyclables is far lower than public perception suggests—especially for plastics, where under 10% of all plastic ever produced has actually been recycled, and even in the well-managed EU only about 14-25% of packaging plastic reaches true end-of-life recycling versus 55% claimed targets—while metals, glass, and paper generally perform much better, and much of the gap stems from structural collection failures, design-driven contamination, and waste export that functions more as disposal-laundering than recycling.
